Minutes of the Annual Meeting of the CANTERBURY CITY COUNCIL
duly convened and held at The Guildhall, Westgate, Canterbury
on 14 May 1997

Present: Councillor Wake (Lord Mayor)
Councillors Mrs Attwood, Mrs Beynon, Bond,
Brade, Burke, Castle, Dixey, Dolby, Douglas,
Mrs Edgar, Fisher, Hando, Hawkswell, Hunter,
James, Mrs Jeffries, Linfoot, Matthews,
Mrs McCabe, McCaul, McLachlan, Parry, Pentin,
Pepper, Purchese, Mrs Reuby, Rivers, Rowley,
Ryan, Miss Samper, Seager, Mrs Seath,
Sinnock, Sole, Street-Williams, Thomas, Vye,
Wales, J P Walker, R E Walker, Mrs Watling,
Whitemore and Wildey.

1 PRAYERS

The meeting was opened with prayers by The Lord Mayor's
Chaplain, Reverend Michael Walling.

2 ELECTION OF LORD MAYOR

It was proposed by Councillor Wales, seconded by
Councillor Mrs Attwood and

RESOLVED - That Councillor Linfoot be elected Lord Mayor
of Canterbury for the Council year 1997/98.

(Councillor Linfoot made a Declaration of Acceptance of
the Office of Lord Mayor of Canterbury. He took the
Chair and thanked the Council for electing him, informing
them that the Lady Mayoress' charity for the Council year
1997/98 was Strode Park Foundation. The Lord Mayor
informed the Council that his Chaplain would be Reverend
Samuel Reading of the Baptist Church, Canterbury).

3 PRESENTATION OF PAST LORD MAYOR'S BADGE

The Lord Mayor presented Councillor Wake with a past Lord
Mayor's badge and thanked him and the former Lady
Mayoress for their services to the Council during the
past year. Councillor Wake congratulated the Lord Mayor
upon his election. Councillor Wake also expressed his
thanks to the Citizens of Canterbury, the Council, his
Chaplain, Reverend Michael Walling and the Council's
staff, and in particular to Mrs Barbara Le Pelley, who
would be leaving the Council's employment shortly, for
their support during his term of office.

4 PRESENTATION OF GAZETTE CUP

Councillor Wake informed the Council that the Gazette Cup
had been awarded to Councillor Castle for his
contribution to the debates at Council meetings during
the past year. Mr B Lewis, Group Editor, Kentish
Gazette, presented the Cup to Councillor Castle who
expressed his thanks for the award.

5 APOLOGY FOR ABSENCE

An apology for absence was received from Councillor Mrs
Carey.

6 APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY LORD MAYOR

It was proposed by Councillor Miss Samper, seconded by
Councillor Parry and

RESOLVED - That Councillor Fisher be appointed Deputy
Lord Mayor of Canterbury for the Council year 1997/98.

(Councillor Fisher made a Declaration of Acceptance of
the Office of Deputy Lord Mayor of Canterbury and thanked
the Council for his appointment).

7 APPOINTMENT OF SHERIFF

It was proposed by Councillor Douglas and seconded by
Councillor Pepper that Councillor Bond be appointed
Sheriff of Canterbury for the Council year 1997/98.

It was also proposed by Councillor Vye and seconded by
Councillor Seager that Councillor Dolby be appointed
Sheriff of Canterbury for the Council year 1997/98.

The nominations were then put and it was

RESOLVED - That Councillor Bond be appointed Sheriff of
Canterbury for the Council year 1997/98.

(Councillor Bond thanked the Council for his
appointment).

8 HERNE BAY FOOTBALL CLUB

Councillor R Walker was pleased to inform the Council
that Herne Bay Football Club had won the Winstonlead Kent
League Championship, the Kent League Cup and the Kent
Senior Trophy this year and asked the Lord Mayor to write
to the Club expressing the Council's congratulations on
their success, and it was

RESOLVED accordingly.

9 ADJOURNMENT OF MEETING

It was then -

RESOLVED - That the Annual Meeting of the Council be
adjourned until 7.30 pm on Thursday 15 May 1997.

(The meeting thereupon adjourned).
